Split Between Treasury Yields and Private-Sector Borrowing Costs

US Treasury yields have fallen even as inflation measures have strengthened, creating a split between sovereign funding costs and private-sector borrowing. September data showed the Producer Price Index up 1.3% month on month and 6.3% year on year, while core producer prices rose 0.7%. Import prices increased 8.1% year on year, yet the 10-year Treasury yield, after moving above 5.3%, slipped back towards 5.1%. The move suggests demand for government bonds is being driven less by improved inflation expectations and more by risk aversion or a view that long-term rates are near a peak. That shift reframes the macro signal from bonds towards growth worries rather than monetary easing.

Credit Markets, Commodity Pressures, and Global Trade Dynamics

Credit markets are sending a harsher message for parts of the AI infrastructure build-out. On 15 October, five-year default insurance on CoreWeave’s debt hit about 1,194.5 basis points intraday, while some of its bonds implied yields of roughly 15–16%, pointing to wider credit spreads even as the risk-free rate eased. At the same time, Brent crude approached $110 a barrel on 16 October, complicating the Federal Reserve’s trade-off between inflation control and tightening credit. Abroad, China reported exports up 36.3% year on year in September and imports up 31%, while producer prices rose 5.0% against 0.9% consumer inflation, leaving global supply chains exposed if US capital expenditure slows.
