Sterling rebounds versus yen as UK GDP revised higher; GBP/JPY eyes 208.30 resistance

Sterling rebounded against the yen in early London trading on Wednesday after UK data came in firmer. GBP/JPY recovered to 208.00 after slipping to a year-to-date low of 206.89 during the Asian session. Final figures showed UK GDP growth in Q2 was revised up to 0.5% from 0.4%, while the year-on-year rate was lifted to 1.4% from 1.2%. The Current Account deficit also narrowed to GBP 19.932 billion in Q2 from a downwardly revised GBP 21.12 billion in Q1, against expectations for a wider GBP 25.6 billion gap.

Japanese releases did little to support the currency, with Retail Trade falling 1.2% in August after a 2.1% rise in July. Industrial Production preliminary data pointed to a 4.8% drop in August versus a 1.7% increase expected, following July’s 0.5% gain. Technically, GBP/JPY bounced to 207.90 but remained below a former trendline, with the RSI (14) under 40 and MACD slightly negative. Resistance is clustered near 208.30, with further levels around 209.00 and 210.15, while support is seen at 207.00 and then near 206.00, close to the 127.2% Fibonacci retracement.

Derivative Trading Outlook For GBP/JPY

We recommend derivative traders closely watch the 208.30 resistance level on the GBP/JPY pair in the coming weeks. While the UK’s upwardly revised Q2 GDP of 0.5% and a narrowing current account deficit of £19.932 billion provide near-term fundamental support, the overall technical momentum remains bearish. With Japan’s industrial production dropping sharply by 4.8% in August, this macroeconomic contrast is likely to fuel heightened volatility.

Options Strategies And Technical Triggers

For short-term options traders, we suggest purchasing near-the-money put options if the pair fails to break cleanly above the 208.30 threshold. The Relative Strength Index is currently hovering below 40, indicating that this upward bounce is technically fragile and vulnerable to a sudden reversal. If the bearish trend resumes, we expect the pair to quickly test the 207.00 support level, with a secondary target down at the 206.00 Fibonacci retracement zone.

Conversely, if the GBP/JPY consolidates above the 208.30 mark, we should pivot to call options targeting the 209.00 and 210.15 levels. Historically, wide interest rate differentials between the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan, which still sit at over 4.5%, have sparked rapid carry-trade buying when UK economic data beats expectations. Traders should utilize knock-out barrier options or tight stop-losses to protect against the sharp intraday swings that characterize this pair.
