Rupiah Gains Limited Support as Trade Surplus Offsets Softer US Jobs, Yield and Oil Drags

The Indonesian rupiah (IDR) is poised for limited near-term support after softer US payrolls and Indonesia’s wider-than-expected August trade surplus. The trade balance offered a buffer, although the improvement was linked in part to weaker imports rather than a clear shift in the external position. Against that, elevated long-end US Treasury yields and firm Brent prices continue to weigh on the broader backdrop, capping expectations for anything beyond a modest USD/IDR pullback unless yields and oil retreat more decisively.

Policy messaging has centred on currency stability. Bank Indonesia said greater use of derivatives does not imply less intensive FX stabilisation, while the Ministry of Finance pointed to coordination with the central bank and the need to preserve the attractiveness of SBN. USD/IDR last closed at 17,875, with momentum cooling as RSI fell. Support is seen at 17,820/40, spanning the 50 and 100 DMAs alongside the 23.6% fibo retracement of the 2026 low to high, then 17,760 at the 21 DMA; resistance levels are 17,950 and 18,000.

Short-Term Derivative Trading Opportunities

We advise derivative traders to look for short-term short opportunities on the USD/IDR pair as mild bullish momentum begins to fade. Recent softer-than-expected U.S. nonfarm payrolls, which grew by a modest 142,000 in the previous release, have taken some immediate upward pressure off the greenback. This cooling in the American labor market, combined with Indonesia’s wider-than-expected August trade surplus of $2.9 billion, offers a tactical window for a downward retracement.

We should target initial support levels between 17,820 and 17,840, which align with the key 50-day and 100-day moving averages. If selling pressure intensifies, a secondary target lies at 17,760, supported by the 21-day moving average. On the flip side, we must place tight stop-loss orders just above the major resistance zone of 17,950 to 18,000 to protect capital from sudden reversals.

Macroeconomic Backdrop and Policy Considerations

Despite this near-term relief, we must remain cautious about committing to long-term rupiah strength. The broader macroeconomic backdrop remains highly challenging as the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stubbornly hovers near 4.0%, keeping capital attracted to dollar-denominated assets. Furthermore, global Brent crude prices remaining firm above $78 per barrel will continue to pressure net energy-importing emerging markets like Indonesia.

We also need to closely watch domestic monetary policy, as Bank Indonesia is actively using domestic non-deliverable forwards to defend the currency. Historically, central bank smoothing operations have successfully capped sudden spikes, keeping the rupiah relatively stable during periods of global market stress. Traders utilizing options or futures should leverage this central bank cushion, expecting range-bound consolidation rather than a full-scale trend reversal in the coming weeks.
