Rupee Slides Towards 95.30 as Oil Risks and Fed Decision Keep Dollar Demand Firm

The rupee weakened again against the US dollar as demand for dollars stayed firm, with oil prices keeping external funding pressures in view. USD/INR extended a three-day rise and traded near 95.20, while the MCX Crude Oil contract expiring on 19 November slipped 1.24% to about Rs. 9,600, still close to its recent high of Rs. 9,828. Oil eased after reports of reduced fears around a wider Middle East conflict, following security discussions involving Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey. However, the risk that the US and Israel could resume attacks on Iran after their elections kept the oil outlook tilted upwards, a backdrop that typically weighs on net oil importers such as India.

Markets also watched for possible Reserve Bank of India action after recent one-way rupee depreciation. A Reuters report said traders view 95.30 as a key level given past intervention, and a sustained break could leave the currency exposed towards 96 per dollar. Attention then turns to the Federal Reserve decision on Wednesday, with focus on the press conference for any shift in the policy narrative. On charts, USD/INR traded at 95.2405, above the 9-period EMA at 95.1168; the RSI stood at 46.05, with support at 95.12 and 94.16, and resistance at 95.80.

Positioning for Volatility in USD/INR and Crude Oil

We should position for heightened volatility in USD/INR options contracts as the pair hovers near the critical 95.30 threshold. Historically, India imports over 85% of its crude oil requirements, which keeps the rupee vulnerable while domestic energy prices sit near Rs 9,600. If the exchange rate breaks cleanly above 95.30 despite expected central bank intervention, we favor call options targeting the 95.80 and 96.00 levels.

For energy markets, we recommend maintaining a buy-on-dips strategy in crude futures rather than chasing sharp rallies. Although recent Middle Eastern diplomatic talks pulled prices down from Rs 9,828, geopolitical risks surrounding the upcoming US midterm elections support a firm price floor. Long call spreads allow us to capture renewed upward momentum in energy contracts while keeping risk strictly defined.

Derivative Strategies and Technical Levels

Derivative traders must also prepare for potential shifts ahead of Wednesday’s Federal Reserve policy announcement. Historical data indicates that global currency options experience significant spikes in implied volatility during US rate decisions, often driving 30 to 50 pip swings in emerging market pairs. We can deploy non-directional strategies, such as straddles, to capitalize on large price movements regardless of whether the Fed delivers a hawkish or dovish message.

On the technical side, we should maintain strict risk controls with protective put options below the 95.12 support level. A sustained breach of this short-term moving average could trigger a deeper correction toward the 94.16 region. Until that support breaks, we expect the broader USD/INR trend to favor further upside testing of the 95.80 resistance level.
