Gold stays near three-month low as firm dollar and FOMC risks keep bulls sidelined

Gold (XAU/USD) stayed under pressure into Tuesday’s European session, hovering above Monday’s three-month low but struggling to regain traction as the US Dollar remained firm. Trading conditions were cautious ahead of the two-day FOMC meeting that concludes on Wednesday. While Federal Reserve officials have indicated no urgency to raise rates, markets are still pricing an over 80% chance of a December increase, with elevated energy prices keeping inflation concerns in focus. Attention is on the policy statement and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference, while Advance US Q3 GDP and the PCE Price Index are also due for guidance on the policy path; a modest rebound in US bond yields after a three-week low, alongside Middle East tensions, continued to support the safe-haven dollar.

Geopolitical risk premium persisted as US-Iran talks stalled and Iran-aligned Houthis said they attacked Saudi Arabia’s East-West crude oil pumping stations and Riyadh airport on Monday, while Hezbollah was reported to be preparing for a potential resumption of hostilities with Israel. Technically, gold remains bearish after breaking beneath a short-term range and trading below the 200-period SMA on the 4-hour chart at $4,198.08. MACD is above zero and rising, while RSI has recovered towards the mid-30s, implying a corrective bounce risk; a firmer breakdown would require acceptance below $4,000, with resistance at $4,065-$4,075, then $4,100, and potentially the $4,200 area if the 200-period SMA is retested.

Fed Policy, Inflation, and Geopolitical Risks Continue to Pressure Gold

We suggest derivative traders maintain a cautious short bias on gold as futures markets price in over an 80% chance of a Federal Reserve rate hike at the December meeting. With Chair Kevin Warsh highlighting sticky inflation driven by high energy prices, strong US Dollar momentum continues to suppress non-yielding assets. We should watch the upcoming Advance Q3 GDP and PCE data closely to gauge the potential duration of the Dollar’s rally.

Geopolitical tension remains high following Houthi strikes on Saudi crude oil pumping stations and rising friction between Hezbollah and Israel. Historically, when rising geopolitical risks coincide with high energy prices, the US Dollar often outpaces gold as the preferred cash-equivalent haven. We expect this unique combination of safe-haven demand and hawkish central bank expectations to keep downward pressure on bullion.

Technical Levels and Risk Management Strategy

On the charts, we recommend waiting for a decisive close below the $4,000 psychological mark before adding to short positions. Past technical breakdowns below major round numbers often trigger automated sell-stops, historically driving prices down an additional 2% to 4% within a few sessions. Should gold experience a minor bounce toward the $4,065–$4,075 resistance area, we view it as an opportunity to set up lower-risk short trades.

To manage risk properly, we must position protective stops just above the key $4,100 resistance level. A sustained move above the 200-period moving average at $4,198 would invalidate the bearish setup and suggest a broader market reversal. For now, with the Relative Strength Index lingering near the mid-30s, we view recent price gains as minor corrective bounces rather than a true change in trend.
