Gold slips as firmer dollar and higher Treasury yields cap bullion, focus turns to US data

Gold fell 0.54% on Monday as the US Dollar edged higher and sentiment turned neutral while Middle East tension lifted energy prices; West Texas Intermediate rebounded from below $97 to $99.30, and XAU/USD was trading at $4,140. Iran’s navy reported attacks by the US military at the Konarak naval base, with two soldiers injured, which coincided with firmer oil and higher US Treasury yields. The 10-year T-note yield rose six basis points to 5.144%, undercutting demand for the non-yielding metal even as markets continued to dial back expectations for an October rate increase after hot inflation data, including the Producer Price Index, had earlier pushed the Greenback lower.

Attention shifts to incoming US data during the Federal Open Market Committee blackout, including the ADP Employment Change 4-week average, jobless claims and S&P Global flash PMIs. Money markets put the odds of an October Fed hike at 16% after September’s 25-basis-point rise, while pricing for December stood at nearly 92%, according to Prime Terminal data. Technically, gold remained range-bound between $4,100 and $4,200, with resistance at $4,200, then the 100-day SMA at $4,238 and the 50-day SMA at $4,326, ahead of $4,500. Support sits at $4,100, then $4,073, $3,996, $3,959 and the yearly low at $3,941, while the RSI stayed bearish but flattened.

Derivative Trading Strategies During Consolidation

We believe derivative traders should prepare for continued consolidation as crude oil prices near $99 a barrel push the 10-year US Treasury yield up to 5.14%. Because non-yielding assets face severe headwinds when bond yields rise, gold remains capped near its $4,200 resistance level. We recommend using range-bound strategies, such as neutral options spreads, while prices remain locked between $4,100 and $4,200.

With Federal Reserve officials silent during their blackout period, upcoming economic prints like flash PMIs and weekly jobless claims will dictate near-term volatility. Money markets currently price in only a 16% chance of an October rate hike, but a massive 92% probability for a rate bump in December. We can take advantage of this setup by trading short-term volatility bursts around data releases using disciplined risk controls on energy and metal futures.

Technical Levels And Risk Management

From a technical perspective, a daily close above the 100-day moving average at $4,238 is needed to signal a genuine bullish reversal toward $4,326. Conversely, a clean break below the $4,100 floor opens the door toward $4,073 and the key psychological support level at $3,996. We advise managing downside risk by purchasing protective put options or taking tactical short positions whenever gold rallies toward upper range resistance.
