Gold hovers near $4,200 as softer dollar offsets Fed hike prospects and Middle East risks

Gold traded around $4,200 into the European session, close to a one-week high, supported by a softer US dollar as Treasury yields eased after a well-received 30-year auction. Comments that the US would hold off resuming strikes on Iran before the 3 November midterm elections, alongside reports of productive talks, helped contain crude prices and temper near-term inflation fears. However, ongoing tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme, conflict around the Strait of Hormuz, and fighting involving the Houthis and a Saudi-led coalition kept geopolitical risk elevated, while markets continued to price an 80%+ probability of a Fed rate increase by year-end, which could limit gold’s upside. Traders are watching preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment and inflation expectations for direction.

Technically, XAU/USD stayed rangebound and held below the 78.6% Fibonacci retracement near $4,104. Momentum indicators improved, with MACD at 5.33 and RSI (14) rising towards 59, though resistance remains near $4,200. Further hurdles sit at the 100-period 4-hour SMA of $4,227 and the 61.8% retracement at $4,231; a break higher targets $4,320, then $4,409, with $4,519 beyond. Separately, UOB expects two further hikes in Dec 2026 and 1Q 2027, and has ruled out a back-to-back move at the October FOMC.

Trader Guidance and Geopolitical Context

We suggest derivative traders watch the $4,200 level closely in the coming weeks as gold maintains its strong bullish momentum. The recent retreat of the US Dollar from its April 2025 highs has opened up short-term buying opportunities for precious metals. However, we should remain cautious as the overhead resistance near $4,200 could cap immediate gains.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz continue to support gold’s safe-haven appeal, which historically drives capital into precious metals during global conflicts. Although crude oil prices have stabilized due to paused military actions ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, long-term inflation risks remain highly volatile. We recommend using protective stop-loss orders to manage the risk of sudden market reversals during this politically sensitive period.

Outlook, Technical Levels, and Strategy

With market pricing showing an 80% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike by December, the US Dollar is highly likely to find strong support on any deep pullbacks. Financial institutions expect this tightening cycle to extend into early 2027, driven by persistent inflation and potential trade tariffs. Derivative traders should monitor the US Treasury yields, as any further corrective decline will act as a direct catalyst for gold buying.

Technically, we see immediate resistance clustered between $4,227 and $4,231, which must be cleared to confirm a broader upward trend toward $4,320. On the downside, we expect a strong safety net of buyers to emerge around the $4,104 mark. Traders using leverage should focus on range-bound strategies until a clear breakout above these key levels is established.
