Direct market access, or DMA, is a trading arrangement that lets participants place orders straight onto an exchange’s order book.
Rather than routing orders through a dealing desk, DMA connects the trader more directly to the underlying market and its live order flow.
In simple terms, DMA lets traders send orders directly to the market.
With DMA, a trader’s order is passed electronically to the exchange, where it interacts with other orders in the order book. This gives access to real-time depth of market and the ability to place orders at specific price levels. DMA is offered through brokers who provide the technology and, where required, act as the member connecting the trader to the exchange.
Potential benefits
Visibility of the live order book and market depth
Greater control over order placement
Fast electronic execution
Transparency in how orders are handled
| Feature | Direct market access | Dealing desk |
|---|---|---|
| Order routing | Straight to market | Through a broker desk |
| Market depth | Visible | Often not shown |
| Typical users | Active and professional traders | General retail traders |
With a traditional dealing desk model, a broker may act as the counterparty and set its own prices. Direct market access instead routes orders straight to the exchange, so trades interact with the wider market’s order book. This can mean greater transparency and tighter pricing, but it also places more responsibility on the trader to manage orders and reactions in fast markets. DMA generally appeals to higher-volume, experienced traders rather than beginners. DMA also tends to come with more advanced order types and direct visibility of the order book, which experienced traders value for precision. That control carries responsibility, though, since there is no dealer stepping in to manage an order on the trader’s behalf. For this reason, many providers offer DMA mainly to clients who trade actively and understand how live order books behave.
DMA is often suited to experienced and active traders because it can involve different pricing and requires familiarity with order types and market depth. It does not remove the risks of trading, and fast execution means decisions must be made quickly. Traders considering DMA should understand the costs and features their provider offers before using it.
Imagine an active trader using DMA to place an order straight onto an exchange’s order book, rather than through a dealer’s own pricing. They can see exactly where their order sits and often get faster execution, which tends to suit experienced traders comfortable managing orders themselves.
Direct market access gives traders a closer connection to the market and more control over how their orders are placed. It appeals to those who value transparency and speed, though the same immediacy means risks must be managed carefully and the approach may not suit every trader.
