Technical analysis is a type of analysis that assesses a trade based on market trends and patterns, with the aid of technical charts and indicators to forecast future price movements. Rather than examining a company’s financial statements, earnings, or economic conditions — which is the domain of fundamental analysis — technical analysis focuses entirely on price and volume data as displayed on a chart.
The core premise is straightforward: all known information about an asset is already reflected in its price. Therefore, analysing how that price has moved historically — the patterns it forms, the levels it respects, the momentum behind each move — provides meaningful insight into where it is likely to move next.
What is technical analysis used for in practice? It is the primary toolkit for traders across forex, equities, commodities, indices, and cryptocurrencies who need to make time-sensitive decisions based on observable market behaviour rather than long-term fundamental valuation.
Technical analysis draws on several core components, each revealing a different dimension of market behaviour:
Price charts are the foundation. Candlestick charts are the most widely used format, displaying the open, high, low, and close for each period — giving traders a visual record of buyer and seller conflict across any timeframe.
Trends are the dominant direction of price movement over a given period. Identifying whether a market is in an uptrend, downtrend, or consolidating sideways is the first — and most important — step in any technical analysis process.
Support and resistance levels are price zones where buying or selling pressure has historically emerged. Support is a level where falling prices have previously found buyers; resistance is where rising prices have met sellers. These levels act as reference points for entries, exits, and stop-loss placement.
Technical indicators are mathematical calculations applied to price or volume data to generate trading signals. Widely used examples include Moving Averages, the Relative Strength Index (RSI), MACD, and Bollinger Bands — each designed to highlight momentum, trend strength, overbought or oversold conditions, and volatility.
Technical analysis is not guesswork with charts — it is a structured, repeatable framework for making trading decisions with defined logic. Here is why it remains the dominant analytical approach for active traders:
It works across all markets and timeframes. The same technical principles — trend, support, resistance, momentum — apply equally to a 5-minute forex chart and a weekly equity chart, making technical analysis universally transferable.
It provides objective entry and exit criteria. Rather than acting on instinct or emotion, technical analysis gives traders specific, chart-based conditions that must be met before a trade is placed — reducing impulsive decision-making.
It reflects collective market psychology. Price patterns repeat across different assets and time periods because they are driven by consistent human behaviour — fear, greed, hesitation, and conviction. Technical analysis is, at its core, the study of crowd psychology expressed through price.
Start with the trend on a higher timeframe — always identify the dominant trend direction on the daily or 4-hour chart before looking for entry signals on a lower timeframe; trading with the trend significantly improves the probability of success on every position
Combine indicators with price action — indicators alone can produce false signals; use them to confirm what you are already seeing in price structure rather than as standalone triggers; an RSI reading means more when it aligns with a key support level on the chart
Mark your support and resistance levels before the session opens — identifying key price zones in advance removes emotion from the decision-making process; when price reaches a pre-marked level, you already have a plan
Review and refine your analysis regularly — technical analysis is a skill that improves with deliberate practice; reviewing past trades against the charts that informed them is the fastest way to sharpen your pattern recognition and reduce analytical errors
