Support and resistance are key price points that provide indications for an asset’s future price movements. They are among the most universally recognised concepts in technical analysis — used by retail traders, institutional desks, and algorithmic systems alike — precisely because they reflect the collective behaviour of every market participant watching the same chart.
Support is a price level where a falling market has previously found buying interest strong enough to halt the decline and push price back upward. It acts as a floor — a zone where demand historically outweighs supply.
Resistance is the opposite. It is a price level where a rising market has previously encountered selling pressure sufficient to stop the advance and reverse price lower. It acts as a ceiling — a zone where supply historically outweighs demand.
These levels are not arbitrary lines on a chart. They are the visible footprint of market memory. Price tends to respect the same levels repeatedly because traders across the market remember where significant buying and selling previously occurred and position themselves accordingly when price returns to those zones.
Support and resistance levels form wherever a significant market reaction has previously taken place. The most reliable levels share common characteristics:
Multiple touches. A level that has been tested and held on three or more separate occasions carries far more weight than one that has only been tested once. Each successful hold reinforces the collective expectation that the level will hold again.
High-volume reactions. When a major price reversal occurs at a level on unusually high volume, it signals strong institutional participation making that level significantly more likely to act as support or resistance in future interactions.
Role reversal. One of the most powerful principles in support and resistance trading is that a broken support level frequently becomes resistance and a broken resistance level often becomes support. When price breaks decisively through a key level, the roles swap. Traders who missed the original move often wait for a retest of that flipped level to enter.
A well-structured support and resistance trading strategy provides traders with clear, objective rules for entry, exit, and risk management — removing emotion from the decision-making process entirely.
Bounce strategy. When price approaches a well-established support level in an uptrend, traders look for a bullish candlestick signal such as a pin bar, engulfing candle, or doji to confirm the level is holding before entering long. The stop-loss is placed just below the support zone and the target is set at the next resistance level.
Breakout strategy. When price breaks convincingly through a resistance level — ideally on strong volume — traders enter in the direction of the break, anticipating a continuation move. The broken resistance then becomes the new support, providing a natural stop-loss reference for the trade.
Retest strategy. After a breakout, price frequently returns to retest the broken level before continuing in the breakout direction. Waiting for this retest offers a lower-risk entry with a tighter stop and a clearly defined reward target.
Mark your levels before the session opens — identify key support and resistance zones on the daily and 4-hour charts in advance; having a pre-built price map removes emotion and allows you to react decisively when price reaches a significant level rather than scrambling to analyse in real time
Use zones, not lines — support and resistance are best treated as price zones rather than exact single-pip levels; markets rarely reverse at a precise point, so marking a zone gives your analysis the flexibility to account for normal price fluctuation without invalidating your thesis
Combine with candlestick confirmation — never enter at a support or resistance level on anticipation alone; wait for a confirming candlestick signal at the level before placing the trade; this single discipline eliminates a large proportion of false entries
Respect the higher timeframe levels — a support level on the daily chart will attract far more buying interest than the same level on a 15-minute chart; always anchor your analysis to the higher timeframe structure and use lower timeframes only to refine your entry
