A vertical spread is a type of options trading strategy involving the simultaneous purchase and sale of options with different strike prices but the same expiration date. Both options are based on the same underlying asset — whether that is a stock, index, or commodity — and are executed in a single, combined trade.
The term “vertical” refers to how strike prices are arranged on an options chain — stacked vertically at the same expiration column. It is one of the most widely used strategies in options trading because it defines both your maximum profit and maximum loss from the outset, making risk management far more straightforward than holding a naked option.
There are two core types of vertical spread:
A bull spread — used when you expect the underlying asset to rise in price
A bear spread — used when you expect the underlying asset to fall in price
Each can be constructed using either call options or put options, giving traders four distinct variations to choose from depending on their market outlook.
The mechanics are straightforward. You buy one option and simultaneously sell another option on the same underlying asset, with the same expiration date, but at a different strike price.
Example — Bull Call Spread:
You buy a call option at a lower strike price and sell a call option at a higher strike price. The premium collected from selling the upper call offsets part of the cost of buying the lower call. This reduces your upfront cost but it also caps your maximum profit.
Example — Bear Put Spread:
You buy a put option at a higher strike price and sell a put option at a lower strike price. Again, the sold option reduces your net cost while capping the maximum gain.
In both cases, the trader pays a net debit (net cost) to enter the position, and the maximum loss is limited to that initial outlay.
Vertical spreads offer a compelling combination of controlled risk and defined reward. Here is why they are a staple strategy for both intermediate and professional options traders:
Capped risk — your maximum loss is known before you enter the trade, making position sizing straightforward
Lower cost than buying outright — selling one leg of the spread significantly reduces the premium paid
Directional flexibility — bullish or bearish setups are equally accessible using this structure
Time decay can work in your favour — when selling the higher strike in a bull call spread, theta erosion on the short leg benefits the overall position
The vertical spread is not a shortcut — it is a disciplined, structured approach to options trading that forces you to define your view, your risk, and your reward before placing a single order. While many traders enter the options market chasing unlimited upside, the vertical spread offers something arguably more valuable: consistency and control.
Identify your directional bias first — a vertical spread is a directional strategy; entering without a clear view on price movement undermines the entire structure
Choose your strike width carefully — wider spreads offer more profit potential but cost more; narrower spreads are cheaper but deliver smaller returns
Match expiration to your timeframe — shorter expirations suit traders expecting a quick move; longer expirations allow more time for the trade to develop
Monitor the net delta — as price moves, the spread’s overall delta shifts; staying aware of this helps you manage the position actively rather than passively
