The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index rose to 91.7 in October from 84.2 in September, with the prior month revised up from 81.9. The improvement was linked to firmer views on current and expected business conditions, while easing retail petrol prices from September to October also provided support. Even with the October rise, the broader multi-year downward trend in confidence remained in place.

In markets, the US Dollar Index traded above 102.00, reaching two-week highs. The US dollar extended gains on Tuesday as positioning stayed cautious ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting on Wednesday.

Dollar Outlook and Derivative Strategy Ahead of FOMC

We expect the recent surge in consumer confidence to 91.7 to spark short-term momentum for the US Dollar, but caution remains essential ahead of the upcoming FOMC decision. Historically, sharp single-month jumps in the Consumer Confidence Index of over 7 points often lead to temporary rallies in the greenback, yet long-term sentiment remains stuck in a multi-year downtrend. Derivative traders should consider using defined-risk strategies, such as bullish call spreads on dollar index futures, while hedging against volatility risks before the central bank speaks.

Consumer Sentiment, Equity Sectors, and Volatility Plays

The pullback in retail gas prices provided temporary relief for consumers, which could bolster short-term earnings expectations for consumer discretionary sectors. Options traders looking at equity indices might consider selling out-of-the-money put spreads to capture elevated implied volatility, taking advantage of the temporary boost in consumer sentiment. However, because overall consumer confidence is still well below historical non-recessionary averages of 100, long-term equity upside could remain capped.

With foreign exchange volatility typically spiking surrounding interest rate decisions, position sizing must be adjusted downward over the coming weeks. We advise utilizing straddles or strangles on major dollar pairs to capitalize on sharp post-FOMC price moves regardless of direction. Combining stronger underlying economic indicators with uncertain monetary policy creates a ideal environment for breakout strategies across energy and interest rate derivatives.
