Gold (XAU/USD) steadied around $4,021 during US trading on Tuesday, recovering from earlier weakness as softer Oil prices drew in buyers, after the metal had hit a three-month low of $3,975 last week. Gains were capped as the US Dollar regained traction ahead of Wednesday’s Federal Reserve decision. The US Dollar Index (DXY) rose to a two-week high above 102.00, after touching 101.45 last week, and a firmer Greenback raised the metal’s cost for non-dollar buyers.

In energy markets, WTI eased to about $100.30 a barrel after reaching $103.28 on Friday, its highest since May, as diplomatic efforts were weighed against supply risks, including Strait of Hormuz shipping threats and Houthi attacks. US data showed Durable Goods Orders up 1.8% in September versus 0.6% expected, while orders ex-transport rose 0.5% against a 0.6% forecast and core capital goods orders slowed to 0.5% from 1.6%; ADP’s four-week average jobs gain eased to 16.8K from 17.5K. The Fed is expected to hold rates after a 25 bps rise in September to 3.75%–4.00%, with the dot plot pencilling in 4.1% for end-2026 and end-2027, while markets price an 80% chance of a December hike. Technically, price remains below the 50-, 100- and 200-day SMAs, with RSI at 35 and MACD negative; resistance sits near $4,219, $4,288, $4,400 and $4,504, while support is $4,000–$3,950.

Gold, Dollar, and Derivative Risks

We should closely monitor the $3,950 to $4,000 support zone on gold derivatives over the coming weeks. With the daily RSI hanging low at 35 and prices trading below key moving averages, a breakdown under $3,950 could trigger systematic selling. Historically, when gold drops below major long-term moving averages during a central bank rate-hike cycle, prices often experience an additional 3% to 5% follow-through sell-off before finding a firm floor.

We must prepare our currency derivative strategies for continued strength in the US Dollar ahead of the central bank’s policy decision. Futures markets currently price in an 80% probability of another rate hike in December, which provides a strong yield cushion for the Greenback above the 102.00 mark. We can consider using defined-risk options strategies, such as call spreads on the dollar, to position for potential upside if central bank officials double down on fighting inflation.

Energy Market Volatility and Position Management

In the energy space, we should use range-bound trading tools or volatility strategies on crude oil futures as WTI hovers near $100 per barrel. Even though diplomatic efforts in Tehran have cooled immediate panic, ongoing maritime risks near the Strait of Hormuz mean supply shocks remain a constant threat. Historical data shows that sustained oil prices above $100 per barrel generally keep headline inflation rates above 3%, directly feeding into higher benchmark interest rates across global markets.

We advise keeping position sizes smaller than usual until the policy statement and official economic commentary are fully digested. Recent data showed core capital goods orders slowing to 0.5%, signaling that parts of the broader economy are cooling even as energy prices stay high. Managing leverage carefully through stop-loss orders will allow us to navigate sudden price swings in both metals and foreign exchange markets.
