A Citi Mexico survey of private economists shows broad expectations that the Bank of Mexico will keep its policy rate at 6.50% through the end of 2027. The median call is 6.50% for end-2026, while 2027 forecasts span 6% to 7.25%. Currency projections were revised higher: USD/MXN is seen at 18.20 at end-2026 versus 18.00 previously, and at 18.60 at end-2027, with a range of 17.00 to 19.80. At the time of writing, the pair traded at 18.64.

Inflation expectations were steady to slightly firmer. Headline inflation is forecast at 3.90% at year-end, unchanged, while underlying inflation is seen easing from 3.88% to 3.80%. For 2027, headline inflation was revised up from 3.83% to 3.86%, and the core reading is projected to hold at 3.80%. GDP growth expectations were unchanged at 1.4% for end-2026, and the 2027 median is 1.8%, with estimates ranging from 1% to 2.1%.

Interest Rate Outlook and Implications for Traders

Monetary policy decisions in Mexico indicate that interest rates will likely hold steady at 6.50% through 2027, leaving little room for sudden rate cuts. As a result, we advise derivative traders to adjust their strategies away from aggressive interest rate cuts and focus on range-bound positioning. With headline inflation projected to hover near 3.90% and economic growth remaining modest at 1.4% for this year, short-term rate futures should reflect a prolonged pause by the central bank.

FX Strategy and Market Volatility

The weakening of the popular carry trade suggests that holding long Mexican Peso positions against the US Dollar is yielding diminishing returns. With USD/MXN currently trading around 18.64, above the projected 18.20 year-end estimate, derivative traders should look to protect against upside spot moves using currency options. Buying call spreads or implementing collar strategies on USD/MXN can offer downside protection while capping the cost of hedging in a volatile emerging-market environment.

Historically, the Mexican Peso experiences heightened sensitivity to shifting global risk sentiment and oil price fluctuations. Given that secondary forecasts project the pair to settle around 18.60 by 2027, volatility sellers might find opportunities in implied volatility spikes by selling out-of-the-money options. We recommend structuring trades that profit from steady sideways movement in spot prices while maintaining tight stop-loss parameters to navigate sudden geopolitical shifts.
