Gold and silver rise as US yields soften; ETF inflows and China buying underpin prices ahead of CPI

Gold and silver ended the week higher as Treasury yields softened and oil prices slipped, helped late on by a well-received 30-year US Treasury auction. The dollar retreated from recent highs but still logged a fourth straight weekly gain, while the 10-year Treasury yield finished around 5.24% and inflation-adjusted yields remained elevated. Federal Reserve minutes showed most policymakers still expected one more rate rise before year-end; market pricing implied low odds of an October move, but did not rule out further tightening.

Against that backdrop, demand beneath the market held up. The World Gold Council said global gold ETFs drew about $10bn in September despite falling prices; third-quarter inflows hit a record $31bn, lifting holdings to an all-time high of 4,256 tonnes. By contrast, leveraged futures traders cut bullish positions. In China, the central bank bought about 23 tonnes in September—its largest monthly addition since 2023—extending purchases to 23 consecutive months and taking declared reserves to around 2,410 tonnes. Silver’s dual investment-industrial role left it exposed to growth worries, while supply remains constrained: one miner reported third-quarter output down 11% year on year after labour disruptions. This week’s focus turns to US CPI on Wednesday, PPI on Thursday and retail sales on Friday, with Iran-related oil risks also in view.

Positioning for Precious Metals Market Dynamics

We recommend that derivative traders brace for sharp short-term swings while positioning for a broader structural floor in precious metals. With 10-year Treasury yields staying elevated near 5.24%, rate expectations will continue to trigger rapid liquidations in leveraged paper contracts. However, trading short positions aggressively carries high risk when heavy institutional buying is quietly absorbing pullbacks underneath.

We advise using defined-risk options strategies, such as bull call spreads on dips, to align with massive physical accumulation. Data from the World Gold Council shows that global gold ETFs saw $31 billion in third-quarter inflows, pushing total holdings to a record 4,256 tonnes. This record-setting accumulation demonstrates that deep-pocketed buyers are actively using paper market drops to build long-term positions.

Central bank actions provide an additional reason for us to stay cautious on short derivatives. China’s central bank recently expanded its reserves toward 2,410 tonnes after adding 23 tonnes in a single month, extending its buying streak to nearly two years. Historically, persistent central bank buying places a firm floor under metals prices, leaving momentum shorts vulnerable to sudden reversals.

Trading Strategy Around Macro Catalysts and Physical Divergence

For upcoming catalysts, we suggest preparing volatility strategies ahead of upcoming economic data releases. Implied volatility is likely to spike around the consumer price index, producer price data, and retail sales reports. A softer inflation reading could spark a violent short squeeze in futures markets as traders scramble to unwind bearish bets.

We also see compelling call option opportunities in silver due to physical supply bottlenecks. Major producers have reported quarterly production drops of 11% year-over-year, showing that mine supply cannot quickly increase when demand turns. Combining industrial demand potential with constrained physical supply means silver derivatives could see explosive moves to the upside.

Finally, we must navigate the clear split between paper speculators and physical accumulators. Short-term traders are selling futures into higher yields, but long-term investors are hedging against persistent inflation and soaring federal debt costs. Managing leverage tightly while looking for long entries on pullbacks remains our preferred tactical playbook for the coming weeks.
