September US payrolls seen shaping October Fed rate call and driving dollar volatility

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics will publish September Nonfarm Payrolls at 12:30 GMT on Friday, with markets weighing what the detail implies for an October Federal Reserve move and the US Dollar. Consensus looks for payroll growth of 90K after 162K in August, while the unemployment rate is seen steady at 4.1% and Average Hourly Earnings at 0.3% m/m. The Fed lifted rates by 25 bps in September, and subsequent US activity data showed S&P Global manufacturing PMI at 57 and services PMI at 58.7. Expectations for an October hike swung as the CME FedWatch probability rose towards 70% before easing, after core PCE inflation printed at 3% in August versus 3.3% expected.

One major bank modelled a softer 50K payroll gain, an unemployment rate of 4.2% and AHE of 0.1% m/m, with 3.0% y/y wages. Market heuristics centre on thresholds: an NFP print above 100K is seen as supportive for the USD and could push EUR/USD lower, while a reading below 50K could pressure the dollar; 50K–100K is viewed as less market-moving. On the chart, EUR/USD is described as trading below the 100-day and 200-day SMA, with RSI below 20; levels cited include 1.1145 and 1.1000 as support, and 1.1460, 1.1520 and 1.1615 as resistance.

Nonfarm Payrolls Data to Drive Fed Expectations and US Dollar Volatility

We are closely watching today’s release of the US September Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report, as it will likely dictate market volatility over the coming weeks. With the market split on whether the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates again this month, this jobs data is the critical piece of the puzzle. We expect that any divergence from the projected 90,000 jobs increase will trigger sharp moves in the US Dollar and major currency pairs.

Market Response Scenarios: Dollar Strength or Weakness Ahead

Historically, US labor market strength has consistently fueled hawkish Fed policy and boosted the greenback. For instance, when employment gains consistently beat expectations in late 2023 and early 2024, the US Dollar Index surged, hitting highs above 106.00 as rate cut expectations were pushed back. If we see a repeat of this trend today with a print well above 100,000, we should prepare for a major dollar rally and downward pressure on the EUR/USD.

Conversely, a weak payroll expansion below 50,000 could severely dent expectations for a near-term rate hike, presenting a prime short-term shorting opportunity for dollar traders. Recent inflation figures, like the Core PCE Price Index steadying at 3.0%, have already given some dovish policymakers reason to pause. We advise derivative traders to manage their risk tightly around the 12:30 GMT release time, as sudden shifts in the 4.1% unemployment rate could spark wild, two-way price swings.
