The crypto market has held near $2.86T for an eighth straight day, though trading since the start of the week has clustered towards the lower end of its recent range as demand for the dollar strengthens. Over the past 24 hours, IOTA rose 7.8%, NEAR gained 4.6% and AAVE added 3.4%, while Internet Computer fell 4.3%, Filecoin slipped 3.5% and Ethereum Classic eased 1.9%. Bitcoin again failed to stay above $85K, after an inflation-led bounce faded as the global government bond sell-off continued, leaving BTC squeezed by a firmer dollar and broader risk aversion.

Bitcoin rose 6.1% in September to $83.7K, and October’s record over the past 15 years shows gains in 10 months, with an average rise of 27.4% versus an average drop of 13%. A bank’s research note said institutional attention is shifting towards Bitcoin’s practical uses and capital markets infrastructure. Separately, another market commentator said the rally is losing momentum as oil prices and Treasury yields rise. On-chain data flagged short-term holders’ unrealised profits at a 21-month high, while altcoin transfer transactions to exchanges hit their highest level since October 2025, a pattern often associated with selling preparation.

Short-Term Volatility and Seasonal Expectations

We see the crypto market consolidating around the $2.86 trillion mark, but recent price action suggests we should brace for short-term volatility as we enter October. While Bitcoin recently struggled to sustain its break above $85,000, we expect the historical “Uptober” seasonal tailwinds to soon clash with macroeconomic pressures. Over the last 15 years, Bitcoin has ended this month with gains on 10 occasions, averaging an impressive 27.4% increase.

However, we advise derivative traders to remain cautious and consider protective hedging, as short-term holders’ unrealized profits have just hit a 21-month high. This massive profit buffer increases the risk of sudden sell-offs, especially with rising 10-year US Treasury yields and high oil prices weighing on market sentiment. To manage this downside risk, we can utilize protective put options or establish short-term short positions if Bitcoin fails to hold its current support levels.

Managing Risks and Positioning for Opportunity

We are also monitoring a surge in altcoin deposits onto exchanges, which has reached its highest level in months and typically signals preparation for selling. For derivative traders, this suggests focusing on relative value trades, potentially shorting weaker altcoins while hedging with long positions on resilient decentralized finance assets. Keeping leverage moderate during this period of high bond-market correlation will help us navigate sudden market shifts without facing forced liquidations.

Ultimately, we should keep a close eye on the US dollar strength index and global bond yields, as these traditional finance metrics are currently dictating crypto’s immediate path. If the bond sell-off stabilizes, we could see a rapid shift from caution to risk-on behavior, fueling the typical October rally. Positioning ourselves with flexible options strategies, like long straddles, will allow us to capture the massive breakouts that historically define this time of year.
