Gold steadies as firm dollar and elevated Treasury yields cap rallies near $4,200

Gold traded close to flat in early European hours on Thursday after a brief lift towards $4,200, as the US dollar stayed firm alongside US bond yields at fresh multi-year highs. US inflation data were softer than expected, but the BEA said the PCE Price Index rose 3.4% year-on-year in August, missing forecasts of 3.7%, while core PCE held at 3% and also came in below expectations. Markets also digested a stronger US growth profile after second-quarter 2026 GDP was revised up to a 2.2% annualised rate from 1.5%, keeping expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening in play. CME Group’s FedWatch Tool showed pricing for an over 85% chance of higher borrowing costs by year-end, while oil-related price risks and the US-Iran standoff continued to support the dollar.

On the charts, XAU/USD remained constrained within a downward-sloping parallel channel, with the 100-period SMA on the four-hour timeframe reinforcing resistance near $4,300. Momentum signals were mixed: MACD has turned positive, while RSI hovered around 44. Support was flagged near $4,082 at the channel floor, with a break below that level seen as opening scope for further downside.

Strategy Recommendations for Derivative Traders

We recommend that derivative traders adopt a selling-on-strength strategy for gold (XAU/USD) over the coming weeks, targeting short positions near the $4,300 resistance level. The precious metal remains locked in a downward channel, heavily weighed down by a robust US dollar and soaring bond yields. With the US 10-year Treasury yield holding near multi-year highs of 4.5%, the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion is simply too high.

We expect upcoming high-impact economic indicators, such as Friday’s Nonfarm Payrolls and September’s inflation data, to fuel further market volatility. Strong economic momentum, highlighted by the revised 2.2% annualized US GDP growth for the second quarter of 2026, has kept an interest rate hike firmly on the table. In fact, futures traders are currently pricing in an over 85% chance of another Fed rate hike before the year ends, which should continue to prop up the greenback.

Geopolitical Impact and Technical Outlook

While geopolitical conflicts usually boost safe-haven gold, the current US-Iran military standoff is uniquely benefiting the US dollar instead. The collapse of peace proposals and expectations of renewed military operations after the November midterms are keeping the currency risk premium exceptionally high. Therefore, we suggest purchasing near-term put options to protect portfolios against a breakdown of gold’s current price floor.

Technically, gold’s key support lies at $4,082, and a decisive break below this level could trigger a sharp wave of technical selling. Although momentum indicators like the RSI near 44 point to temporary stabilization, they do not indicate a reversal of the primary downtrend. We can exploit this environment by using bear put spreads to maximize returns while strictly limiting our risk exposure.
